Our Organization

An enriching and safe space for children and women in Afghanistan, Shamsa Children’s Village is a crucial refuge for orphaned or abandoned children, and vulnerable women.

From its inception, the aim of Shamsa Children’s Village (SCV) has been to create a structured community of care to provide every woman and child with supportive, safe and stimulating environments. Trained by PARSA Afghanistan and the Healthy Afghan Child Program, all social workers and staff have significant expertise in supporting vulnerable children and women who have lost their families.

Consistent with the best of international practices within care-based environments, SCV provides each child and woman with a family structure including children of similar ages and an adoptive mother. Each family unit formed of an adoptive mother and several children inhabits a private home within SCV, giving both vulnerable women and children a safe space to grow within a supportive home environment.

At present there are over 100 children who call SCV home. Introducing them into a familial environment has presented a greater sense of belonging and an encouragement to form healthy bonds.

Founded by Maryam Gailani, SCV encompasses a new vision and social concept for the responsible and effective upbringing of children in safe and healthy environments, creating positive change on an individual level. SCV is modeled after the SOS orphanage model of an independent, non-governmental, social development organisation.
